My body calms, finally, at home and I notice
the shifts in their bodies’ languages, when I claimed my cane
at the party I just left. Someone's dog and I partied in the corner with fried chicken and good pets.
This is only the 2nd party I've attended since this new body, my body, were forced to live with one another.
Sometimes, it feels like this body doesn’t want anything to do with me either.
It tries to run away from me, making my arms flap in the air, like a chicken trying to escape the coop!
Or a past life on an electrocution chair getting shocked into a ghost.
This body, my body, likes to take naps
that take me by surprise, every time.
Face to floor, out for just a few minutes, sometimes seconds.
Yet, somehow, when I wake up from a faint, I’m almost always incredibly comfortable.
Breast and cheeks molded to the carpet, the moss, couch, or dirt.
This body knows all the cozy places, and when she finds one, she falls right in for a snuggle.
And if we're lucky, a puppy will somehow find us for a cuddle.
Body knows best and needs her rest. I never did that for her.
Before, I got sick, before I got injured. Before I changed.
In fact, I wasn’t nice to my body at all. She might even say worse.
But I did put her to some good use too.
I’ve hiked mountains all over the Americas. I’ve traveled more open road and rail than anyone I know (in this life), with both stranger's and feral dogs by my side.
Even back then, I preferred the dogs, because
dogs never judge. They understand what it's like to get the zoomies, too.
Offerings
On November 9th, I will be hosting a peer support group for creatives with FND. This takes place on a peer support platform called HeyPeers. We will primarily be focusing on ways that we have lost our creative pursuits and how we can reclaim our creativity with our limitations. You can register here.
On November 22nd, we will be taking a walk on Moses Carper Trail at Riverview Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Experience mindfulness writing prompts while spending time with nature. Sit by a tree and write her story. Listen to a reading while you put your feet into the grass and find their roots. This workshop is not for only nature writers but also for nature loving writers and any creator that appreciates the gifts of life. This event is rain or shine!
On December 20th, I will be offering a creative writing class as we broach the Winter Solstice. In this offering you will experience mindfulness writing prompts while enjoying a carefully crafted medicinal tea that deepens our stories. This generative workshop is targeted towards writers but encourages all tea loving creators to attend.
Last but not least, I received my copies of Nourishing Our Bodies, Nourishing Our Movements Community Cookbook that was put together by Abortion Care Tennessee to fundraise for access to abortion for northern Tennesseans. My recipe, Unnerved Medicinal Tea was featured at the closing of this unique cookbook! To get your copy today, and donate to further abortion access, check out Abortion Care Tennessee.
